The Lesser of Two Evils

Why in the world would a Christian ever choose any evil? God has clearly urged us to choose good and blessings over evil and cursing.

This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may liveand that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. Deuteronomy 30:19, 20

Followers of Jesus are to walk in the light of obeying his teachings—not giving into the devil. To conclude that one must “choose the lesser of two evils” is, in effect, to say, “Well, the devil has me backed into a corner and I have no way out so I have to do things his way.” God always provides a way out of every temptation (1 Corinthians 10:12-14). Followers of Jesus do not have to give in to the devil.

The “lesser of two evils” can sometimes even look good, as can a political candidate but Scripture warns that even the devil can appear as an “angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:13-15).

Don’t be fooled—evil is always from and of the devil and should never be accepted by a follower of Jesus.

Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers.A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. Luke 6:44-46

If you choose evil, you’ll get evil.

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:7-9

"Karma Sowing and Reaping"

“Karma is just another way of saying what Jesus said, ‘You reap what you sow”

This comparison is loosely made by people who don’t realize that the term karma is a package deal that comes directly from Hinduism requiring one to pay for one’s own sins—in another life! In their way of thinking, it seems that you can never really know what it is you did in that other life. I’ve observed this lack of information resulting in judgmental speculation from supposed friends, when people are going through hard times; they shake their heads and say, “Must be bad karma somewhere.” Punishment for such wrong-doing seems to go on forever and results in being reincarnated as, perhaps, a rat.

Karma: Hinduism, Buddhism. action, seen as bringing upon oneself inevitable results, good or bad, either in this life or in a reincarnation: in Hinduism one of the means of reaching Brahman (member of the priestly class).

Since Christians in no way believe in reincarnation it’s never appropriate for a Christian to refer to anything in their life as karma. This is good news! Anyone who follows Jesus as his disciple has his or her sins paid for by Jesus' death and resurrection! You don’t have to keep paying for your sins if you follow Jesus—he paid for them already!

This scripture refers to the difference between following Jesus and following one’s own way—not an endless recycling of human life into animal life.

Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. Hebrews 9:27,28

Many of the sayings that Christians repeat as Biblical truth are in fact from other sources--even other religions or are misunderstandings of scripture. (While these don’t always technically fit the definition of an urban legend, I’ve come to refer to them as such because they are legendary rather than true and have, through the generations, had the effect of yeast left far too long to rise—spilling the bread over the counter and onto the floor!) Just as clearing the clutter out of a home can reveal what truly belongs, making life less of a burden, it’s necessary to clear out the clutter of folk beliefs from Christianity to reveal the true riches of scripture.

Feel free to write me your “yeah, but’s” and “what about’s” and we can look at the Bible together (of course I haven’t covered every possible angle in this format; for a deeper treatment on some of these issues see my Freeing Truths blog at freeingtruths.blogspot.com.) I’m not interested in arguing but would be happy to share with you what I’ve learned and “hear” what you’ve learned from The Word, for that’s the written foundation of every follower of Jesus and the only standard.

About Me

I’m Joan C. Thomson, a writer, artist, and speaker but most of all, I’m a follower of Jesus and all that I am flows from there. I used to parrot what I heard in church and the American culture but the more I read the Bible, the more questions I had. I saw that a lot of what I heard didn’t add up with what I read (though some did). Somewhere along the way, God gave me the gift of knowing when something doesn’t add up—or when it does, along with a drive to find out what the Truth is. I’ve been studying the Bible personally and in many classes for over forty years but my understanding jumped into a higher gear when I took a college introductory Hebrew and Greek class. There I learned to use Biblical reference books to see what the Bible truly says.

I invest a lot of time and Biblical research into everything I believe, write—even in many of my art pieces. I put everything that comes my way through the filter of Jesus’ teachings (the New Testament of the Bible). Why go to all that trouble? First, it’s what I do, it’s who I am as a follower of Jesus and I am utterly convinced that it’s crucial to believe the right thing (Biblically) and then live it. It can be a matter of life and death—spiritual or physical. And freedom from the unnecessary heavy weight of false teachings—well-meaning though they may be, gives freedom to take up Jesus’ teachings.

Though I’ve participated in quite a few denominations over the years I don’t identify with any denomination, nor with “conservatives” or “liberals”—I’m simply a follower of Jesus.

My hope for this blog is that you too, will want to know what the Bible truly says on a given subject and that you will read what I have written as a prompt to dig more deeply yourself, as a signpost of where to look. I don’t expect anyone to take my word for it but to be a “Berean” and look into it themselves as did the early Bereans.

“Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.As a result, many of them believed…” Acts 17:11,12

When I was a child of seven or eight years, my best friend and I wondered about the important matters of life. What would happen if we didn’t rinse the shampoo off our hair? My friend had already put the question to her mother, who answered, “Oh you wouldn’t want to do that because your hair would be so bright and shiny that it would blind your friends!” Horrified at such a prospect, the girl solemnly determined to always rinse her hair. Likely my friend’s mother meant to paint an exciting fairy tale-like answer; instead she put on her a heavy burden with her beautiful lie. (It’s interesting that the truth was the exact opposite—dull hair.)

Beautiful lies or myths or old-wives tales are still fabricated or carried forward from the past to soften the sharp edges of difficult times but they are still lies. Lies, in the end, do not encourage but deceive and often make life worse. How much better it is to speak truthfully to our neighbors (Ephesians 4:25) and to know the Truth—Jesus who will set you free! (John 8:31,32)
